When the talented young violist Franz Weiss arrived in Vienna, it was as a member of the Schuppanzigh Quartet. He was thrust almost immediately into a collaborative relationship with Ludwig van Beethoven, also a recent arrival in the city. Their relationship lasted nearly thirty years as the Schuppanzigh Quartet premiered the vast majority of Beethoven’s string quartets. In 1806, Beethoven dedicated his Op. 59 quartets to Count Andrey Razumovsky, in whose sumptuous palace the quartet resided and worked. In 1813, Franz Weiss, also a gifted composer, dedicated his pair of quartets, Op. 8 to Razumovsky. Join us as we present Weiss’ astonishingly fresh and inventive Op. 8 quartets, by turns hilarious, heartbreaking, profound, and, for their time, quite daring and experimental. Program to feature Franz Weiss String Quartets, Op. 8, no. 1 in G major and Op. 8 no. 2 in C minor
